Florida Public Service Commission and Representative Geraldine Thompson Encourage Consumers to Sign Up for Discounted Telephone Service


TALLAHASSEE — Florida Public Service Commissioner Matthew M. Carter II today joined Representative Geraldine Thompson and members of Orlando churches to encourage eligible consumers to sign up for discounted telephone service.

"I am working to enable my constituents to offset telephone rate hikes through registering for the Link-Up Florida and Lifeline Assistance Programs provided through the Public Service Commission (PSC),” said Representative Thompson. “In order to benefit from these programs, constituents must know about them.”

The Link-Up Florida and Lifeline programs help low-income Floridians obtain and maintain essential telephone service.  More than 145,000 people are currently enrolled in the Lifeline program, but many more consumers are eligible. To increase participation, Representative Thompson invited Commissioner Carter to join members of Orlando area churches at the town hall-style meeting to raise awareness about the programs and help consumers enroll.

“The PSC welcomes this opportunity to team up with Representative Thompson and increase the number of consumers taking advantage of the Link-Up Florida and Lifeline programs,” said Commissioner Carter.  “Ensuring eligible Floridians receive assistance with their telephone needs is one of my priorities.”

To increase participation in the Link-Up Florida and Lifeline programs, the PSC recently made it easier for consumers to sign up.  Consumers simply fill out an online application on the PSC website (www.floridapsc.com) and hit “submit.” More than 750 people have already taken advantage of the new online enrollment process that the Commission launched in October.

The PSC anticipates increasing participation further in 2007 by coordinating the enrollment process with the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) to sign up DCF clients who qualify for the telephone assistance programs.

The PSC is committed to making sure that Florida's consumers receive their electric, natural gas, telephone, water, and wastewater services in a safe, affordable, and reliable manner. The PSC exercises regulatory authority over utilities in the areas of rate base/economic regulation; competitive market oversight; and monitoring of safety, reliability, and service.
