Florida Public Service Commission Encourages Consumers to “Read Up and Reach Out”


TALLAHASSEE — Building on the theme of National Consumer Protection Week, February 4-10, 2007, the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) is encouraging consumers to “Read Up and Reach Out” about two programs that could make a big difference in someone’s life.

“READ UP”

The Link-Up Florida & Lifeline programs help low income Floridians obtain and maintain essential telephone service. More than 145,000 people are currently enrolled in the Lifeline program, but many more consumers are eligible.  To increase participation in the Link-Up Florida and Lifeline programs, the PSC recently made it easier for consumers to sign up.  Consumers simply fill out an online application on the PSC website (www.floridapsc.com) and hit “submit.”

Eligibility is determined by participation in one of the following programs: 

      • Medicaid 
      • Food Stamps 
      • Temporary Assistance to Needy Families  
      • Supplemental Security Income  
      • Federal Public Housing Assistance 
      • Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program 
      • National School Lunch Free Lunch Program

“REACH OUT”

During National Consumer Protection Week, the PSC is encouraging consumers to make a difference and reach out to someone they know about signing up for these important programs.  The PSC is dispatching teams across Florida this week to further educate  consumers about the Link-Up Florida & Lifeline programs. PSC outreach teams will hold information sessions at libraries throughout the state, meeting with consumers about the two important programs and other issues related to electric, natural gas, water, wastewater, and telecommunications services.

“The Public Service Commission is pleased to be a part of this continuing consumer awareness effort and welcomes the opportunity to increase awareness of the Link-Up Florida & Lifeline programs,” said PSC Chairman Lisa Polak Edgar. “We encourage Florida’s consumers to ‘read up and reach out,’ to make well-informed decisions about their utility services.”

National Consumer Protection Week empowers people by highlighting current consumer protection and education efforts across the nation.  This year’s theme - “Read Up and Reach Out: Be an Informed Consumer” – encourages people across the nation to take advantage of the wealth of information that can enhance confidence in the marketplace.
