Service Hearing Set for FPL Need Determination in Miami

TALLAHASSEE — The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) will conduct a service hearing Wednesday on a Florida Power and Light (FPL) proposal to construct two additional nuclear-fueled generating units at its Turkey Point electrical power plant site. The Turkey Point plant is located on Biscayne Bay, 24 miles south of Miami and east of Homestead.

The service hearing provides an opportunity for the public to present evidence and testimony concerning the need for the proposed generating additions. As part of the need determination process, the PSC must consider the need for electric system reliability and integrity, adequate electricity at a reasonable cost, and fuel diversity and supply reliability.

All members of the public who wish to make a statement should be present at the beginning of the hearing set for the following time and location:

Wednesday, January 9, 2008
4:00 p.m.
Miami Dade College
Wolfson Campus
Building 1000, Room 1261 (Auditorium)
300 NE 2nd Avenue
Miami, Florida

Environmental impacts and other issues related to the proposed plant and associated facilities will be considered by other agencies in separate public hearings.

The PSC is committed to making sure that Florida's consumers receive their electric, natural gas, telephone, water, and wastewater services in a safe, affordable, and reliable manner. The PSC exercises regulatory authority over utilities in the areas of rate base/economic regulation; competitive market oversight; and monitors safety, reliability, and service.
