PSC Chairman Kicks Off Black History Month in Tallahassee

TALLAHASSEE — To celebrate Black History Month, Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) Chairman Matthew M. Carter II will participate with the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) Office of Urban Opportunity and the Greater Frenchtown Front Porch Revitalization Council in a Lifeline Awareness Day.

The event will take place at the following time and location:

Tuesday, February 12, 2008
6:00 p.m.

LeVerne Payne Community Center
450 West Fourth Avenue
Tallahassee, Florida

"Throughout history, we in the African American community have made some great strides," said PSC Chairman Matthew M. Carter II.  "It’s only fitting that during Black History Month, we do more for our community to make sure the less fortunate are cared for.  As Chairman of the PSC, I am striving to do good for the people of Florida.  And, one way to accomplish this is to make sure consumers who need phone service, but can't afford it, get it at a discounted rate."

This event is free to the public and will showcase talent from the Greater Frenchtown area and provide families with the opportunity to sign up for the Lifeline Assistance and Link-Up Florida programs. The programs offer consumer discounts on qualified subscribers' telephone bills.

The Front Porch Florida Initiative was created in 1999 to help revitalize distressed communities.  By working with underserved communities that are dedicated to positive cooperation and communication, the initiative helps make them a better place to live, work, and play.

The PSC is committed to making sure that Florida's consumers receive their electric, natural gas, telephone, water, and wastewater services in a safe, affordable, and reliable manner. The PSC exercises regulatory authority over utilities in the areas of rate base/economic regulation; competitive market oversight; and monitors safety, reliability, and service.
