FPSC Kicks Off Statewide Effort to Assist Seniors During National Consumer Protection Week

TALLAHASSEE — Florida’s Public Service Commission (PSC) hopes to help seniors around the state save money during the 10th annual National Consumer Protection Week (NCPW), March 2-8, 2008. PSC Chairman Matthew M. Carter II will begin the week’s activities by showing seniors in Tallahassee how to save money through conservation.

“The PSC is leading sessions at two dozen senior centers across the state this week to help residents learn how to save money by conserving water and energy,” said Chairman Carter.  “Conservation makes sense – both for the environment and the pocketbook.”

In addition to energy conservation, Chairman Carter will discuss the Link-Up Florida and Lifeline telephone assistance programs, which can reduce telephone bills for those who qualify. Brochures and applications on the topics will be available at the event.

The theme of this year’s NCPW is Financial Literacy: A Sound Investment. Recognized nationwide, the week highlights efforts to help consumers master the financial facts of life. More information is available at http://www.consumer.gov/ncpw/.

The public is invited to attend the event at the following time and location:

Monday, March 3

11 a.m. – Noon

Tallahassee SeniorCenter

1400 North Monroe Street

Tallahassee, Florida32303

The PSC is committed to making sure that Florida's consumers receive their electric, natural gas, telephone, water, and wastewater services in a safe, affordable, and reliable manner. The PSC exercises regulatory authority over utilities in the areas of rate base/economic regulation; competitive market oversight; and monitors safety, reliability, and service.
