PSC and Talquin Electric Identify Common Residential Energy Leaks

TALLAHASSEE — Florida’s Public Service Commission (PSC) promotes energy conservation programs, and PSC Commissioner Lisa Polak Edgar is taking her own advice.   Today, Commissioner Edgar partnered with her electric utility, Talquin Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Talquin), in a home energy usage analysis and is encouraging other customers to contact their utility companies to do the same.

“Each one of us is responsible for conserving energy.  We can reduce our electric bills while preserving energy supplies,” said PSC Commissioner Edgar.  “Talquin’s energy analysis has identified ways for my family to improve our personal energy consumption, and I plan to act on their suggestions.”

Each analysis is tailored to the specific home and uses a thermal imaging camera to locate air intrusion, temperature anomalies, and duct leakage.  Other tools used include a photographic, non-contact camera; smoke gun; digital meter; and data loggers that measure temperature, humidity, dew point, air leaks, and much more.  Insulation that has deteriorated or formed gaps is also identified, as are insulation levels, building integrity, and peripheral consumption from pumps and pools.

“Talquin is providing this service to about 40 members per month,” stated Dan Ard, Talquin’s Energy Services Specialist.   “It’s our goal to educate and assist our members in reducing energy consumption.  Most people do not realize how much energy they actually use and are often amazed at the small changes that can make a big difference in their electricity bill.  Members have been pleasantly surprised that this valuable service is provided to them at no additional charge.  Response has been so positive that I am usually scheduling appointments one month in advance.”

Findings from today’s energy analysis will be compiled into a report and sent to Commissioner Edgar.  Performed free for Talquin members, the analysis helps customers manage the rising cost of energy and improve their household energy efficiency.
