PSC Customer Service Hearings Set for FPL Rate Request in Sarasota and Ft. Myers

TALLAHASSEE — The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) will conduct two customer service hearings on Friday, June 19, 2009, for customers of Florida Power & Light (FPL).  In March, FPL filed a petition with the PSC for an increase to its base rates.

This month, a 1,000 kwh monthly bill for residential customers is $107.04.  Using FPL’s proposal, a typical 1,000 kwh monthly bill for residential customers would increase by $12.40 in January 2010 before any fuel cost adjustments.  FPL provides electric service to approximately 4.5 million retail customers in all or parts of 35 Florida counties.

The hearings allow customers to comment on the proposed rates and any quality-of-service issues relevant to the utility.  Customers are invited to attend the hearings at the following times and locations:

Friday, June 19, 2009
11:00 a.m.

Sarasota City Hall Commission Chambers
1565 1st Street
Sarasota, Florida

6:00 p.m.
Lee County Public Education Center*
School Board of Lee County Board Room
2855 Colonial Boulevard
Ft. Myers, Florida

*Customers received a bill insert identifying the Ft. Myers hearing location as the Dr. James A. Adams Public Education Center. While the address on the bill insert was correct, the facility is named the Lee County Public Education Center.

The PSC is committed to making sure that Florida's consumers receive their electric, natural gas, telephone, water, and wastewater services in a safe, affordable, and reliable manner. The PSC exercises regulatory authority over utilities in the areas of rate base/economic regulation; competitive market oversight; and monitoring of safety, reliability, and service.
