PSC Sets Hearing for Conservation Goals

TALLAHASSEE — Florida’s Public Service Commission (PSC) will conduct a hearing beginning Monday, August 10, to establish new conservation and energy efficiency goals for Florida’s electric utilities subject to the Florida Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (FEECA).  The seven utilities subject to FEECA are Florida Power & Light Company, Florida Public Utilities Company, Gulf Power Company, JEA, Orlando Utilities Commission, Progress Energy Florida, and Tampa Electric Company.

The 2008 Legislature amended the FEECA statute to give the PSC broader authority to maximize energy efficiency in Florida.  The PSC was directed to evaluate the technical potential of all demand-side and supply-side conservation measures including demand-side renewable energy systems.

The hearing allows the utilities and interested parties to present testimony and other evidence that will be used to set each company’s new conservation goals.  Commissioners will vote on the new goals by January 1, 2010.

The hearing, set for the following time and location, could last up to five days:

Beginning Monday, August 10, 2009
9:30 a.m.
Betty Easley Conference Center
Joseph P. Cresse Hearing Room (Room 148)
4075 Esplanade Way
Tallahassee, Florida

The PSC is committed to making sure that Florida's consumers receive their electric, natural gas, telephone, water, and wastewater services in a safe, affordable, and reliable manner. The PSC exercises regulatory authority over utilities in the areas of rate base/economic regulation; competitive market oversight; and monitoring of safety, reliability, and service.
