PSC Approves Renewable Contract for Progress Energy

TALLAHASSEE — Furthering its support of renewable energy development, Florida’s Public Service Commission (PSC) today approved Progress Energy Florida’s (PEF) purchase of firm capacity and energy from a Trans World Energy, LLC (Trans World) biomass electric generating facility.

“This facility will help diversify Florida’s fuel mix, enhance system reliability, and encourage the use of renewable energy resources,” said PSC Chairman Art Graham.

Trans World plans to sell 40 MW of capacity and associated energy to PEF for 20 years beginning July 1, 2013.  The facility is expected to supply the energy needs of approximately 10,000 Florida homes and save between $28.5 to $61.6 million in energy production costs.

With facility construction planned in Citrus County, Trans World estimates that 100 jobs will be created during construction and 45 jobs will be needed to operate the plant.

The PSC facilitates safe and reliable utility services at fair prices for Florida's consumers.  Primary responsibilities include setting fair rates, encouraging competition, and monitoring for safety and reliability.
