PSC Hosts Workshop for Lifeline Awareness Week

TALLAHASSEE — To ensure that eligible Floridians get information on affordable phone service, Florida’s Public Service Commission (PSC) is hosting a Lifeline Awareness Week workshop on Friday, September 7.  Social service agencies whose clients can benefit from the federal Lifeline Assistance Program (Lifeline), state agencies facilitating Lifeline’s promotion and application process, and telecommunications companies offering Lifeline are invited.

Administered by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Lifeline provides a monthly bill credit for basic phone service.  To curb program abuse, Lifeline underwent FCC rule changes this year that limit benefits to one per eligible household, with annual recertification required to continue receiving the benefit.

“Florida was one of two states recognized by the FCC last year for leadership in identifying and eliminating program fraud,” said PSC Chairman Ronald A. Brisé.  “The workshop will educate our partners on ways to ensure that consumers enrolling in Lifeline are not already receiving the service.  Avoiding duplicative services helps the Lifeline program benefit even more eligible consumers.”

Now in its fourth year, Lifeline Awareness Week events will be held throughout Florida on September 10-14 to help seniors and low-income Floridians learn about and apply for the program.

The Lifeline Awareness Week workshop will be held at the following date, time, and location:

Friday, September 7, 2012
9:30 a.m.
Betty Easley Conference Center
Room 140
4075 Esplanade Way
Tallahassee, Florida
