Consumers Love Saving Energy at PSC National Consumer Protection Week Kickoff

TALLAHASSEE — Who doesn’t Love Saving Energy?  To bring practical, energy saving ideas to consumers, the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) highlighted ENERGY STAR appliances today at Mays-Munroe to kick off National Consumer Protection Week (NCPW).  Joining PSC Chairman Ronald A. Brisé were Representative Alan B. Williams, Leon County Commissioner Mary Ann Lindley, and local business owner Mike Munroe.

“I want to thank Mike Munroe for letting us showcase his store’s energy efficient appliances, saving customers energy and money on their utility bills,” said Chairman Brisé.  “Everyone loves to save money.  During NCPW, we’re showing consumers how to do just that by practicing energy efficiencies, and they’ll learn to love saving energy!”

“Appliances must meet stringent criteria to earn a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ENERGY STAR label,” said Representative Williams.  “And, it’s worth reading that label when purchasing new appliances.  Qualified refrigerators use 20 percent less energy and qualified dishwashers use 10 percent less energy and 18 percent less water.”

Brenda Buchan, with the Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services, headed the Florida Office of Energy federal appliance rebate program.  “The EPA started the ENERGY STAR label as a voluntary program to reduce energy use,” Buchan said, “and to make it easy for consumers to identify and purchase energy-efficient products that offer savings on energy bills without sacrificing performance, features, and comfort.”

Mary Ann Lindley, Leon County Commissioner, commended Mike Munroe for his contributions to the community and his commitment to customers.  “Mike’s family business is a Tallahassee icon,” Commissioner Lindley said. “We appreciate his experience with ENERGY STAR appliances in highlighting their benefits…saving customers money and helping the environment, too.”

Mike Munroe concluded the event by demonstrating the energy efficiencies of an ENERGY STAR refrigerator, dishwasher, and range, and showing consumers why they “Love Saving Energy!”

During the 15th Annual NCPW, March 3-9, PSC staff will make presentations to consumers in Pembroke Pines, Hollywood, Orlando, Kissimmee, Sanford, and Belle Glade, showing them how to save money through energy and water conservation and how to sign up for the Lifeline Assistance telephone discount program, if they qualify.
