FTRI Recognized as "PSC Helping Hand" for March

TALLAHASSEE — Florida’s Public Service Commission (PSC) today recognized Florida Telecommunications Relay, Inc. (FTRI) for being a PSC Helping Hand.  Partnerships are essential to raise public awareness, and the Commission appreciates FTRI’s assistance in sharing information on Lifeline Assistance (Lifeline), a telephone discount program, with Florida’s deaf, hard-of-hearing, deaf/blind, and speech-impaired residents.

“FTRI provides an invaluable communications service to Florida families with members who have hearing loss or speech disabilities,” said PSC Chairman Ronald A. Brisé.  “It is vital for these consumers to learn ways to reduce their utility bills, and FTRI makes sure Lifeline materials reach those who qualify for the program in this important population segment.”

“Because of our continuing cooperative partnership, it is my privilege to name FTRI and its Executive Director, James Forstall, as the PSC Helping Hand for March,” Chairman Brisé added.

During two PSC workshops held last year with state agencies and social service representatives from across Florida, the Commission helped organizations connect to share resources and more effectively serve their clientele.  To continue the workshops’ success and recognize positive working relationships, each month this year the PSC is acknowledging a partner--a PSC Helping Hand--who has assisted the Commission’s outreach efforts.

“We are honored to be recognized as a PSC Helping Hand,” said Mr. Forstall.  “FTRI, along with our 22 distribution centers statewide, participate in nearly one thousand outreach events each year.  We are glad to share information about the Lifeline program while we’re out in the community.  Many of the people eligible for FTRI’s specialized telephones may also be eligible for Lifeline.”
FTRI is a non-profit corporation that administers the statewide Florida Relay System (FRS).  Available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, FRS facilitates telephone calls between people with hearing loss or speech disabilities and other individuals by using special equipment and a communications assistance operator to facilitate the telephone conversation.
