TALLAHASSEE —
Promoting the development of renewable energy resources and creating a
more balanced fuel supply for Florida will be the focal point of discussions
between the state’s investor-owned electric utilities, representatives from the
renewable generation sector, and Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) staff
on Monday, March 6.
In December, Commissioners directed staff
to conduct a workshop to address recent legislation and explore opportunities to
promote the growth of renewable generation.
Renewable energy sources are divided into
several broad categories: solar, wind, water, biomass, and
hydrogen. Florida’s renewable electric production is largely
derived from municipal solid waste (MSW), biomass materials such as
agricultural and wood waste used as fuel in boilers, and waste heat recovered
from industrial manufacturing processes. In Florida, renewable resources
provide approximately three percent of the state’s electricity. These resources
have the potential to minimize the volatility of fuel costs and help diversify
fuel types, easing Florida's growing dependence on natural gas for electric
production.
Information obtained at this workshop may
be used by the Commission when considering future contracts for the purchase of
renewable generation. The workshop will be held at the following time and
location:
Monday, March 6, 2006
9:30 a.m.
Betty Easley Conference Center, Room 148
4075 Esplanade Way
Tallahassee, Florida
