Tallahassee Senior Center Recognized as PSC Helping Hand for August

TALLAHASSEE — Florida’s Public Service Commission (PSC) today recognized the Tallahassee Senior Center (Center) as a PSC Helping Hand.  Partnerships are essential to raise public awareness, and the Commission appreciates the Center’s assistance in helping area seniors learn how to lower their monthly utility bills.

“Our partnership with the Tallahassee Senior Center helps us reach seniors throughout the Big Bend with information on energy and water conservation, Lifeline Assistance, and utility bill assistance.  The Center is an invaluable resource for area seniors to remain active and socialize through regular ‘lunch and learns,’ senior expos, and other events,” said PSC Chairman Ronald A. Brisé.  “It is a pleasure to name the Tallahassee Senior Center and its Manager, Sheila Salyer, as the PSC’S Helping Hand for August.”

Seniors from the Center recently helped the PSC spread summer conservation tips by sharing their experiences in how they kept cool in “days gone by.”  Hear their heartwarming stories of how they beat the summer heat before the days of “AC” on the PSC’s website.  Today’s younger generation can benefit from the seniors’ creative hot weather lifestyle tips.

“We thank Chairman Brisé and the Commission for this recognition,” said Ms.Salyer.  “The Tallahassee Senior Center appreciates the PSC’s participation in our many activities to help area seniors live active, healthy, and financially sound lives.  The PSC’s outreach materials help Florida seniors who want to better manage their utility bills by learning energy and water conservation practices or, if eligible, apply for the Lifeline Assistance program to reduce their monthly telephone bill.”

During two PSC workshops held last year with state agencies and social service representatives from across Florida, the Commission helped organizations connect to share resources and more effectively serve their clientele.  To continue the workshops’ success and recognize positive working relationships, each month this year the PSC is acknowledging a partner--a PSC Helping Hand--who has assisted the Commission’s outreach efforts.

Ms. Salyer added, “The Tallahassee Senior Center welcomes everyone to participate in our exercise, dance, and educational classes.  There’s something of interest for all ages at the Center.”
