Office of Public Counsel Recognized as Final PSC Helping Hand for 2013

TALLAHASSEE — Florida’s Public Service Commission (PSC) today recognized the Office of Public Counsel (OPC) as a PSC Helping Hand for December.  Highlighting the PSC’s partnership with OPC concludes the Commission’s year of acknowledging agencies and organizations that have helped raise public awareness to the Lifeline Assistance (Lifeline) telephone discount program and to the importance of energy and water conservation.

“Through our partnership with OPC, Florida’s ratepayers are assured that their voice is heard during Commission proceedings,” said PSC Chairman Ronald A. Brisé.  “OPC also assists families who qualify by income—at or below 135 percent of the federal poverty level—apply for Lifeline to keep connected to their families, emergency and community services, and job opportunities.”

“As Florida’s utility consumer advocate, Public Counsel JR Kelly and OPC’s staff assist customers statewide by bringing their concerns before the Commission and participating in our annual Lifeline Awareness Week to reach qualified residents and increase program participation,” Chairman Brisé continued.

During two PSC workshops held last year with state agencies and social service representatives from across Florida, the Commission helped organizations connect to share resources and more effectively serve their clientele.  To continue the workshops’ success and recognize positive working relationships, each month this year the PSC acknowledged a partner—a PSC Helping Hand—who assisted in the Commission’s outreach efforts.

“It’s rewarding to work with the Commission, Florida consumers, and the utility companies in finding solutions that serve the public’s best interest,” said Kelly.  “We also enjoy assisting the Commission in its outreach efforts to curb resident’s utility bills through conservation strategies and to promote the Lifeline program, and we are pleased to complete the PSC’s 2013 Helping Hand recognitions.”
