Julie Brown Becomes Chair of the Florida Public Service Commission


With today’s Commission Conference, Commissioner Julie Brown officially began her term as Chairman of the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC).  She will serve as Chairman of the five-member panel for two years.

“I am honored to lead this collegial body of dedicated public servants and am prepared for the pressing challenges that face our state,” said Chairman Brown. “I look forward to working with my colleagues as we tackle tough decisions to ultimately benefit the public’s best interest.”  (See Chairman Brown’s remarksas prepared for delivery.)

The PSC Chairman acts as the Commission’s administrative head and chairs most official agency proceedings. Chairman Brown has served on the Commission since January 2011 and is beginning year two of her second four-year term.

A member of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC), Chairman Brown serves on NARUC’s Committee on Gas, Subcommittee on Nuclear Issues–Waste Disposal, the Gas Technology Institute’s Public Interest Advisory Committee, and on the New Mexico State University’s Center for Public Utilities Advisory Council; she previously served on NARUC’s Committee on Energy Resources and the Environment. A member of the Nuclear Waste Strategy Coalition since 2011, she was recently elected to serve on its Executive Committee to lead the group’s efforts to expand membership. Chairman Brown also chaired the Florida Legislature’s 2013 Study Committee on Investor-Owned Water and Wastewater Utility Systems, which addressed the critical issues facing the industry and customers around the State.

Prior to her PSC appointment, Chairman Brown was Associate Legal Counsel of First American Corporation, a Fortune 500 company, where she handled a variety of legal issues, including corporate compliance with regulatory authorities.

Chairman Brown graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Florida, where she received the Outstanding Female Leader Award, served as President of Florida Blue Key, was inducted into the Hall of Fame, and received the Dean’s Cup for the College of Journalism and Communications. She earned a Juris Doctorate from the University Of Florida Levin College Of Law and is a member of the Florida Bar and of Leadership Florida, Class XXXIII. Chairman Brown and her husband, Hank, have two children, Emerson and Tripp.
