Florida PSC Urges Residents to Call Before You Dig

TALLAHASSEE — Gearing up for any outdoor home improvement projects?  Remember to “call before you dig,” the mantra of April’s National Safe Digging Month!

The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) reminds residents to call 8-1-1, the Sunshine State One Call Center, before starting any digging project, large or small.  The federally mandated 8-1-1 number helps prevent diggers from unintentionally hitting underground utility lines, often resulting in injuries, property damage, and inconvenient outages.

An 8-1-1 call notifies affected utility companies to dispatch crews to mark your underground utility lines.  Utility markings show those who dig the approximate location of underground lines to help prevent undesired consequences.

“We urge homeowners and contractors to call 8-1-1 a few days before digging,” said PSC Chairman Julie Brown.  “This one free phone call before you dig can help protect you from a serious or even fatal injury and save you unnecessary penalties and repair costs.”

So, remember to call before you dig, not only during National Safe Digging Month, but every month.  Then wait for your underground facilities to be marked and dig with care!
