PSC Urges Readiness for 2019 Hurricane Season

TALLAHASSEE — Life in Florida means being ready for the 2019 hurricane season before it begins on June 1.  There’s still time to prepare, and the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) can help.

“Preparedness makes a big difference in safety and resiliency in the wake of a hurricane,” said PSC Chairman Art Graham. “Start with a plan—know what to do, where to go, and how to prepare your home. Compile a disaster supply kit, including non-perishable emergency supplies to help your family.

“How well you prepare before hurricane season can help your family quickly recover if/when a storm strikes,” Chairman Graham added.

To assist with hurricane season preparation, planning tools are available on the PSC’s website. The PSC’s “Hurricane House,” in English and Spanish, includes 19 preparation tips for your home and family, from planning an evacuation route to dealing with downed power lines.  You can also find a consumer tip on making a hurricane kit, as well as a consumer tip on storm preparation.

The PSC also ensures that state’s electric utilities are prepared for storm season. Today, PSC staff provided the Commission with an overview of its April Hurricane Preparedness meeting with utilities where each company’s processes were reviewed, including PSC-mandated storm preparedness initiatives:

• Facility inspections, maintenance, and repairs;
• Vegetation management;
• Flooding and storm surge mitigation;
• Wooden pole inspections; and
• Coordination with other utilities, government, and community groups.
