Pensacola’s Carmike Cinema Receives PSC’s Triple E Award

TALLAHASSEE — The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) is awarding its first 2015 Triple E Award—for Energy Efficiency Effort—to Pensacola’s Carmike Cinema.  Carmike is demonstrating “E” for effort by upgrading lighting in its 18 movie theaters to save energy and reduce costs.

“For the Award’s second year, the Commission is pleased to recognize Carmike for implementing PSC-approved, cost-effective conservation programs,” said PSC Chairman Art Graham. “We applaud the leadership of Laura Larson, Complex Manager, who made creative lighting changes in Pensacola-area cinemas. Carmike not only saved on the bottom line, but also kept costs down for Pensacola’s film buffs.  We hope other small businesses will follow suit, working with their local utility to help reduce their energy footprint.”

“Like other businesses trying to cut costs, we wanted to institute some energy-conserving and cost-cutting measures,” said Larson. “We worked closely with Gulf Power to replace 386 (150 watt) incandescent lights with 386 (7 watt) LED lights. I’m honored to accept this award and appreciate Gulf Power’s assistance in helping Carmike Cinema save an estimated 300,960 kWh annually.”

“Gulf Power has a long history of working with businesses to help them save energy,” said Natalie Smith, Gulf Power spokesperson. “We recognize that controlling expenses is a crucial part of running a business. This is why we are happy to help our customers identify energy-saving solutions to help them save money.”

The PSC encourages cost-effective conservation and renewable energy to reduce the use of fossil fuels and defer the need for new generating capacity. Through the Florida Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act, the PSC approves conservation programs for the state’s five investor-owned utilities, JEA, and the Orlando Utilities Commission.

Covering the state’s five major geographic areas, each month the PSC gives its Triple E Award to a local business that has accomplished superior energy efficiency. Look for PSC Triple E Award recipients throughout 2015 under Hot Topics on the PSC’s homepage,
