The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) is awarding its July Triple E Award—for Energy Efficiency Effort—to Melbourne’s Brevard Zoo whose mission is, “Wildlife Conservation through Education and Participation.” Brevard Zoo leaders have demonstrated “E” for effort by implementing energy efficient measures on their 75-acre facility to save energy and reduce costs.
“We are pleased to recognize Brevard Zoo and Deputy Executive Director Jon Brangan for implementing PSC-approved, cost-effective conservation programs,” said PSC Chairman Art Graham. “With an educational display next to its gift shop, Zoo administrators are educating their 400,000 annual guests on how to harness the sun to generate electricity. This kind of thoughtful leadership helps other organizations work with their local utility to find ways to save energy.”
“There’s a lot to see and do when you visit Brevard Zoo,” said Brangan. “While our focus may be on wildlife conservation, reducing our carbon footprint plays a critical role in how we can save animals and their habitats. Our staff and volunteers are always seeking ways to be better stewards of our environment, and now with this display, we can inspire Zoo visitors to meaningfully reduce energy consumption as well.”
“Brevard Zoo has incorporated ‘green’ design into all of its facilities, including solar hot water, a zoned HVAC system, and other equipment and processes,” said Brad Gunter, Manager, FPL DSM Energy Efficiency Programs. “They are also actively converting illumination throughout the complex to LED lighting and have participated in our ‘Business on Call’ program since 2010, saving the Zoo more than $5,000.”
The PSC encourages cost-effective conservation and renewable energy to reduce the use of fossil fuels and defer the need for new generating capacity. Through the Florida Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act, the PSC approves conservation programs for the state’s five investor-owned utilities, JEA, and the Orlando Utilities Commission.
Covering the state’s five major geographic areas, each month the PSC gives its Triple E Award to a local business that has accomplished superior energy efficiency. Look for PSC Triple E Award recipients throughout 2015 under Hot Topics on the PSC’s homepage.
