Commissioners Approve TECO Request |
|
|
TALLAHASSEE — The five-member Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) has voted to allow Tampa Electric Company (TECO) to take steps to increase the reliability of its emission control facilities, or scrubbers, at its Big Bend power plant in southeastern Hillsborough County. The project is designed to improve the reliability of the scrubbers so that TECO can continue to operate its plant continuously to comply with a Clean Air Act Consent Decree with the Environmental Protection Agency. The new project will allow TECO to meet stricter Consent Decree requirements and continue operating the plant. The commissioners agreed with the PSC staff recommendation that TECO’s customers would benefit from improvements to the scrubbers because the scrubbers will help maintain Big Bend’s energy production, thereby avoiding the need to secure replacement generation from higher cost units. TECO will submit a detailed summary of costs of the upgrade for the PSC to review in its yearly environmental cost recovery proceedings. TECO is an investor-owned electric utility serving more than 600,000 customers in west central Florida. ### |
