TALLAHASSEE —
The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) will recognize National Consumer Protection Week, February 4 - 10, 2007, by dispatching outreach teams across the state to meet with Florida's consumers. National Consumer Protection Week empowers people by highlighting current consumer protection and education efforts in the fight against fraud in communities across the nation.
PSC outreach teams will hold information sessions at libraries across Florida, meeting with consumers about issues related to electric, natural gas, water, wastewater, and telecommunications services. The Commission is committed to ensuring that Floridians receive safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates, while protecting against fraud and promoting the health of the state's economy. National Consumer Protection Week 2007 - "Read Up and Reach Out: Be an Informed Consumer" - encourages people across the nation to take advantage of the wealth of information that can enhance confidence in the marketplace. PSC staff will share advice on topics such as reading electric meters, making informed decisions about telephone service, and reducing energy and water usage. Also, qualified consumers may sign up for the Link-Up Florida and Lifeline programs at any of these scheduled events. Link-Up Florida and Lifeline help make basic, local telephone service available to low-income customers. "The Public Service Commission is pleased to be a part of this continuing consumer awareness effort and welcomes the opportunity to partner with the state's public libraries," said PSC Chairman Lisa Polak Edgar. "We encourage Florida's consumers to 'read up and reach out,' to make well-informed decisions about their utility services." National organizers of this year's consumer week include the Federal Trade Commission, the Federal Citizen's Information Center, the Federal Communications Commission, and the National Association of Attorneys General.
