TALLAHASSEE —
The members and staff of the Florida Public Service Commission will conduct three customer service hearings to provide consumers an opportunity to comment on a request by BellSouth Telecommunications, Inc. (BellSouth) for realignment of exchange boundaries of St. Johns, St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra Beach, Jacksonville, and Green Cove Springs, and for consolidation of the Julington exchange with the St. Johns exchange. BellSouth is seeking approval to realign some of the exchange boundaries in St. Johns county. If approved, the realignment would require approximately 4,000 customers in the area to change their seven-digit telephone numbers. BellSouth’s proposal would create a larger St. Johns exchange that would encompass most of north St. Johns County. BellSouth’s proposal for realignment would consist of five phases.
BellSouth is also seeking permission to consolidate all customers in the Julington exchange into the new St. Johns exchange. However, the Julington exchange customers would not incur a telephone number change. BellSouth’s proposal would also shift some customers from the Ponte Vedra Beach exchange (west of the Intracoastal Waterway ), Jacksonville exchange (customers located around Bartram Plantation Development), Green Cove Springs exchange (east of the St. Johns River ) and north St. Augustine exchange to the new St. Johns exchange. This group of customers may choose to retain their old calling scope and rates for a period of two years. However, grandfathered customers would still be required to change their telephone number even though they select to retain their old rates and calling scope for the two-year period.
